Senior Recognitions 2017
As graduation season approaches, it is time to recognize our graduating seniors for their achievements. Carlsbad traditionally has great athletes; students who excel in drama, dance, and tech fields; and students who have notable accomplishments outside of their school experience.
The highest academic honors that Carlsbad Unified has to confer are the designations of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. These titles are conferred on the students with the highest GPAs at their high schools. These students exhibit impressive talent, intellectual curiosity, and perseverance. Carlsbad Unified prides itself on academic rigor, and these students have risen to the challenge, consistently and successfully.
Carlsbad High School’s Valedictorian for 2017 is Julia Zeng. There was a four-way tie for Salutatorian (all within .01 of each other) so CHS is honoring Muhammad Lehrmann, Ruigi Wang, Jeffrey Sardina, and Miranda Lakey.
Sage Creek High School’s first-ever Valedictorian is Cameron Yenche, and Anna Perhach is Salutatorian.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships based on PSAT scores. Of 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 are honored, 34,000 as Commended Students and 16,000 students as Semifinalists. National Merit Finalists are selected from that group, and may be eligible for a variety of scholarships.
Two students at CHS were named National Merit Finalists: Julia Zeng and Muhammad Lehrmann. There were twelve National Merit Commended Students at CHS: Ethan Brandt, Karen Cavicchio, Alexander Detaboada, Zane Emery, Chad Hamner, Adrienne Lunneberg, Christopher McCarthy, Keli McGuire, Ruchal Patel, Jeffrey Sardina, Alexander Tuchler, and Lauren Zane.
Three SCHS students are National Merit Finalists or Semifinalists: Zachary Lynch, David Meinen, and Anna Perhach.
Every year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT test.
The following CHS students were invited to apply to the National Hispanic Recognition Program: Mason Lin, Mary MorenoChristia, Alexander Detaboada, and Melissa Kay.
Ryan Torres of SCHS was recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar by the NHRP, and Melissa McCallum and Nicolas Reynoso were also invited to apply for recognition.
We congratulate these accomplished students, and wish them well as they move forward to college and careers.
